In the context of a broadening of educational coverage at all grade levels, the purpose of this article to analyze the impact of self-identification of skin color and family social origins on chances of transition/access to preparatory school education in Mexico. It also seeks to explore the extent to which the type of educational institution students attend in high school has a differentiating impact on their transition to preparatory school. The study uses current data from the inter-generational social mobility module of the National Statistics Institute (INEGI) for 2016. The methodological approach was based on metrics of school progression (high school-preparatory school) and logistical regression models. The results show that despite the expansion of educational coverage, class and ethnic inequalities persist, and can be related to institutional effects (segmentation by type of high school) in the transition to preparatory school education.
