Resumen

DONOSO ROMO, Andrés. The 1968 student movement in Brazil and discussions about the role of education in social transformation. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2018, vol.40, n.161, pp.53-68. ISSN 0185-2698.

This article analyzes discussions over the role of education in social transformation during the 1968 student movement in Brazil. To do so, it uses the methodology of qualitative historic analysis based on primary and secondary sources, and semi-structured interviews of eight specialists. The results include the identification of various demands within the movement, a more detailed study of educational demands, and the application of a political-spatial model for interpreting them. Based on these results, the paper concludes that there were two trends within the movement, and in both, education was viewed positively as a path to building more just societies. Nevertheless, while for some education could help free society, the other current believed that education could only be transformed after society was freed.
