Resumen

VIVEROS MALDONADO, Germán. The presence of Classics in New Spain theatre. Nova tellus [online]. 2011, vol.29, n.1, pp.159-173. ISSN 0185-3058.

The aim of this paper is to point out that the ancient Greco-Roman classical culture constitutes a fundamental precedent to the current Mexican one from different perspectives: the literary, the scientific, the philosophical, the historical and the legal ones. From this huge scenery, we have considered here only the part that concerns theatre in New Spain, not only because it offers numerous and significant samples of how drama evolved, but also because it proves its ability to recreate themes, myths and characters taken from the Classics. Thus, we have tried to expose a theme about Classical tradition that had an impact in New Spain as well as in contemporary Mexico.

Palabras llave : Theatre in New Spain; originality; recreation; Classical tradition.
