Abstract: In this paper, I examine which elements of the myth of Atalanta enabled its survival from Antiquity to the present day. I find in the classical period her figure was used to recall the role of women in society; the Renaissance, to warn about the danger of her nature and the need for her domination; and Modernity, to enunciate the resistance of subordinated alterity. Thus, through a comprehensive study of literary and iconographic versions and variants of the myth, I argue that the articulation between identity and alterity is a device for its transformation and survival.
