The author of this essay sets out from the perspective of history and logic to present a critique of linguists' phonological reconstruction of hypothetical proto-languages. For the case of Zapotec tongues, his criticism centers on errors made by various linguists while reconstructing proto-Zapotec. Specifically, two scholars resorted to speculative excesses to negate, based on their reconstructive hypothesis, the documented presence of the phoneme in contemporary languages of the Zapotec family.
