Summary: This article covers the study of the ceremonial procession known as Ipaina Huitzilopochtli, which took place in the twenty-day cycle of Panquetzaliztli, the festival of the guardian Mexica god in the solar calendar cycle. A comparative analysis, both of different colonial chronicles in Náhuatl and Spanish, and modern contributions, reflects on certain aspects overlooked by researchers. In addition, the different routes along which the main players traveled from one place to another are analyzed and the supernatural characters involved in the journey are examined in relation to the annual recreation of the myth of the birth of Huitzilopochtli. The results of the research into these “multiple” journeys point to the need for a multi-faceted study of the social and political dimension of the Valley of Mexico and of the context of the creation of the Colonial chronicles in order to gain a better understanding of specific religious events.
