The aim of this paper is to undertake a bibliographic review of changes in the sphere of civil-military relations in Argentina and Uruguay during the first three decades of the 20th century. A comparative, historical and perspective is used to revisit the explanatory factors several historians and social scientists have used to explain the conditions underlying the accumulation of power of the armed forces during a period when they underwent significant internal (doctrinal and organizational) and external changes (regarding the relations they maintained with the political system and civil society). The hypothesis guiding the analysis suggests that between 1900 and 1930, the Argentinean armed forces became a military power whereas in Uruguay they tended to be relegated from the political and social scene.
