LOPEZ MERAZ, Oscar Fernando. Crimes, Territories and Subjects in Colonial Veracruz. An Exploration from the Perspective of the Novohispanic Inquisition. Secuencia [online]. 2022, n.114, e1980. Epub 19-Sep-2022. ISSN 2395-8464. https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i114.1980.
This article seeks to examine the crimes and subjects known to the Novohispanic Inquisition during the second half of the 18th century for the case of what is now the state of Veracruz. The method is based on data mining and documentary analysis. The originality of the article lies in its use of an exploratory, descriptive exercise with state-of-the-art analytical instruments to portray the historical actors denounced for destroying the social and symbolic order. The findings show that the adoption of the bourbon reforms led to greater vigilance of colonial Veracruz society, and that the Inquisition was still active at the end of the viceroyalty period.
