The historical research of crimes against property in Mexico is still incipient. Within this universe of felonies, frauds and scams barely feature in Mexican historiography. The importance of this topic lies in the possibility of framing social and cultural phenomena associated with modernization and identified with the Porfirian ethos. Specially, it allow us to examine the connection between these forms of crime and the evolution of communications, technologies and, of course, the role of social control institutions and their limits. This article seeks to expand our understanding on these issues based on the criminal career of Felipe Malagamba, a swindler who used various identities to commit his deceptions.
