LOPEZ MORENO, Ignacio. New Rurality, New Governance in Mexico: an Operative Proposal for Territorial Categorization of New Rural Territories. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2017, vol.32, n.92, pp.217-239. ISSN 2007-8358.
The countryside in Mexico has undergone a strong change in the last decades. The social, cultural, and economic changes of recent years have made obsolete the way in which government relates to the Mexican countryside. A clear example of this is the very definition of the rural territory based on demographic models. The author aims to propose an operational categorization for the rural new territories of Mexico that responds to a relational logic. In a second moment, the article discusses if this categorization and the new Mexican “rurality” need a different decision-making model. It proposes the new governance as an alternative, because with this system the local actors will be able to involve themselves in a conscious and participatory process to build their own territorial categorization, and to achieve their own socio-economic configurations in this political transition.
