Resumen

CRUZ CARDENAS, Gustavo; ORTIZ S., Carlos A.; GUTIERREZ C., Ma. del Carmen  y  VILLEGAS MONTER, Ángel. Land Classes with Citrus Production of the Ejido Pueblillo Papantla, Veracruz. Terra Latinoam [online]. 2008, vol.26, n.1, pp.11-19. ISSN 2395-8030.

Land classification, based on local knowledge, permits differentiation of soil types present in an area and determination of their relationships with non-target plants (arvenses), tillage and yield. In this study farmers' knowledge of soil aptitude for orange production in the ejido Pueblillo, was compared with technological approaches. Three land classes (sandy, clay, and river silt) were identified. These soils were classified in six soil subunits according to the FAO/UNESCO system, five soil subunits according to the World Reference Base and five subgroups related to Soil Taxonomy. Local knowledge of soil is detailed, considering both surface and subsurface layers and correctly identifying spatially the land class that is most apt for orange production. Soil mineralogy of land classes does not affect orange production.

Palabras llave : orange yield; mineralogy; soil cartography; local approaches; technical approaches.
