The increasing specialization of modern science is generating a wide variety of new disciplines that are rarely combined in research projects. It is argued that it is necessary to combine disciplines in order to have a comprehensive understanding of complex social phenomena. Although research projects can be approached from different perspectives, this article focuses mainly on potential contributions from mathematical non-linear dynamic systems. We posed questions such as: What is it understood by complexity? How can it be studied? How can it contribute to Social Science and to solve specific social problems? We conclude the article by answering these questions based on a review of the following topics: 1) different approaches to the study of complexity, 2) background of the mathematical perspective, 3) development of social sciences and their relation to the mathematical approach, 4) state of the art of the mathematical approach to complexity sciences, 5) contributions from studies of complexity to the understanding and solving social problems, 6) emotional behavior and decision making, and 7) non-disciplinary teaching of complexity.
