Teaching chemistry with the aim of training forensic scientists represents a challenge for teachers accustomed to aspiring chemists, in light of the different professional qualities expected from each. In this work we address how to teach the periodic table in a forensic context, as per the guidelines set for General Chemistry, an introductory course in the curriculum of the BA Program of Forensic Science of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. An exploratory study allowed us to probe teachers’ use of the periodic table in classes aimed at forensic scientists. By way of examples, we offer two cases in which an understanding of information contained in the periodic table plays a key role in forensic investigations: both can be used in the classroom to teach the topic of periodicity within an interdisciplinary, forensic milieu. We conclude with recommendations for teachers, arising from insights drawn from both cases.
