This article analyzes the current transformation of the Mexican system of science, technology and higher education. This system contains factors that jeopardize the advance of the social sciences in the country and threaten their traditional identity. With particular reference to socio-cultural anthropology, the author suggests the study of three aspects of social sciences in Mexico to obtain the empirical knowledge necessary to promote it. The study ends with a call to restore the Utopian dimension of the social sciences.
