In this article the function of various devils in literature is explored, from Las memorias del diablo of Frederic Soulié, to El fistol del diablo, by Manuel Payno, moving through El diablo cojuelo and Le diable boiteux. The role of the devil in the novel of Payno is explored as a catalyst of free will, and in fact, sometimes the agent of God.
