VANDEN BERGHE, Kristine. Transfer and banishment in Luisa Carnés’s El eslabón perdido. Lit. mex [online]. 2023, vol.34, n.2, pp.83-104. Epub 05-Abr-2024. ISSN 2448-8216. https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.litmex.2023.34.2/0023s01x7924.
This article discusses El eslabón perdido, a novel that the Spanish author Luisa Carnés wrote during her Mexican exile. It will explore to what extent the narrator of this story, a professor named Alcántara, gives an account of his intention to draw links between Spain and Mexico and to what extent he takes advantage (or not) of the existing conditions in order to delineate alternative territorial entities. We will begin by focusing on the values that he defends and denounces to, in a second moment, demonstrate how he embodies the figure of the desterrado as is was conceptualized by another Spanish exile in Mexico, José Gaos, in contrast to that of the transterrado. Finally, we will ask ourselves the question of how similar the narrator can be to the author.
