Sugar cane industry has played an important role not only in the economy but in the spatial organisation of Morelos State since its introduction in the sixteenth century. However, as a result of the great crisis affecting national sugar cane industry, other factors of disturbance have emerged during the last years, as modifiers of the original pattern of Morelos territorial organisation. In spite of that, the contemporary influence of sugar cane industry on some demographic and economic phenomena of Morelos state is unquestionable.
