BEDOYA PEREZ, Juan Carlos; ARDILA ARIAS, Alba Nelly y REYES CALLE, Julina. Evaluation of an artificial subsurface flow wetland for the treatment of wastewater generated in the Institución Universitaria Colegio Mayor de Antioquia, Colombia. Rev. Int. Contam. Ambient [online]. 2014, vol.30, n.3, pp.275-283. ISSN 0188-4999.
The results obtained from the implementation of a subsurface flow constructed wetland (SSFCW) at the Institución Universitaria Colegio Mayor de Antioquia (IUCMA) campus for wastewater treatment are presented in this article. For that purpose, two independent wetlands were constructed. Each one was characterized by different macrophytes (Typha latifolia and Cyperus papyrus). Different physicochemical and microbiological parameters, including biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, phosphorus, coliforms and some metals such as nickel and zinc were measured and compared. With both macrophytes an effluent with lower levels of all parameters analyzed with respect to the values obtained in the initial wastewater characterization was achieved. However, the species T. latifolia showed better performance than C. papyrus in terms of effluent water quality obtained after the treatment.
