VELASCO GOMEZ, Ambrosio. Fray Alonso de la Veracruz: fundador del republicanismo mexicano. Tópicos (México) [online]. 2008, n.34, pp.209-221. ISSN 0188-6649. https://doi.org/10.21555/top.v34i1.153.
Alonso de la Veracruz was the first professor of western philosophy in America and the most outstanding humanist of the School of Salamanca in New Spain. He was one of the founding fathers of the Real University of Mexico in 1553. This paper analyzes the influences of Victoria and Domingo de Soto in De la Veracruz’s criticism to political and economic domination of Spain over indigenous people of the New Word, based on a multicultural republicanism. From this perspective he promoted autonomy for indigenous people and defended their rationality, setting the foundations of mexican republican humanism.
