The case of Malaysia is offered as the sole example in the Asia-Pacific region of a country where there is no majority ethnic or religious group enjoying an 210 Resúmenes/Abstracts Política y Cultura, primavera 2004, núm. 21, pp. 203-211 hegemony over the other minority groups. The article shows how, since 1970, heightened economic development was attained through the interaction of the ethnic groups and cultures found in the country, and not in spite of them. Emphasis is placed on the reduction of the poverty rate - from 49% to 7.5% of the population - over those 30 years and on the reduction of inequalities as reflected by the Gini coefficient.
