In the 1990s the tendency to form regional trade blocs intensified. The Asian countries have pursued multilateralism rather than regionalism, although, among other factors, the financial crisis that affected the area (1997-1998) has highlighted the convenience of regional cooperation, not only with respect to trade, but also in the monetary and financial orbits. Having as its framework the economic situation in Asia and its processes of trade integration, this study considers its advances with respect to monetary and financial cooperation and the possibilities influencing these at a global level.
