Objective: To present our experience in the treatment of patients with acute appendicitis during pregnancy. Setting: General Hospital Toluca Dr. Nicolás San Juan. Instituto de Salud del Estado de México. Second Level Health Care Hospital. Design: Observational, retrospective, descriptive, transversal. Statistical analysis. Percentages as summary measures for qualitative variables. Patients and methods. Pregnant patients with a diagnosis of acute appendicitis, subjected to appendicectomy in a 3-year period (2007-20010). Analyzed variables were: maternal age, gestational age, clinical data, time of evolution, type of surgical approach, complications, maternal and fetal mortalities. Results: Twenty four pregnant women were subjected to appendicectomy. Incidence was of 1 per 608 pregnancies. Average age was of 24 years, fifty-four percent of cases occurred during the first trimester of pregnancy. Complications were encountered in 37.5% of the patients, and the most frequent complication was infection of the surgical wound, followed by early loss of pregnancy. Conclusions: Appendicitis is more frequent during the first trimester of pregnancy. The most frequent complication is infection of the surgical wound, and 66% of the pregnant patients with appendicitis were within the age group of 16 to 25 years.
