MEZA-LOPEZ, Luis Raúl et al. From the aid station to a trauma concentration center: History of the Balbuena General Hospital. Cir. gen [online]. 2019, vol.41, n.2, pp.120-126. Epub 09-Oct-2020. ISSN 1405-0099.
The health services of Mexico City can not be conceived without first mentioning the Central Relief Station, which was created in 1909 and whose primary function was to provide a rapid and prompt response to the blood incidents in Mexico City. It was in 1962 when the then-known Balbuena Hospital was created, initially dedicated, like its predecessor, to attending emergencies that were derived from violent acts. Nevertheless, this institution needed to train medical personnel with experience in trauma that it itself demanded, it is for this reason that in 1976 general surgery residency was formally created with recognition by the UNAM, which has graduated until today more than 2,000 general surgeons. In 1984, Balbuena Hospital acquires the name of General Hospital. In 1986, it served as a place for the first generation of Emergency residents, laying the foundations of this specialty in the country. In the last decade, Balbuena General Hospital has strengthened the protocols of immediate attention in medical, surgical and obstetric-gynecological emergencies, strengthening the “Mater Code” and laying the foundations for the development of the “trauma code”, making today one of the most experienced and recognized trauma hospitals in the country.
