Resumen

TORRES-ROJO, Juan Manuel  y  VELAZQUEZ-MARTINEZ, Alejandro. Profitability of seed tree regeneration method vs assisted regeneration. Madera bosques [online]. 2023, vol.29, n.1, e2912366.  Epub 24-Nov-2023. ISSN 2448-7597.  https://doi.org/10.21829/myb.2023.2912366.

A comparison of the profitability of the seed tree regeneration method versus planting is carried out. The comparison provides useful information on the economic efficiency of both methods of regeneration which is useful for decision making. The evaluation is based on an algorithm to estimate the number of seed trees to left standing based on-site quality, variable that accounts for environmental and species intrinsic factors. An example of model calibration is shown and through a Monte Carlo simulation varying several model and costs parameters, the net present value is evaluated for both, regeneration, and planting methods over a period of t years. Results show that if there are no physiological constraints for the species regeneration through planting, this method is more cost effective than natural regeneration. Some economic and social variables that influence the producer's final decision to adopt planting are discussed. It is concluded that assisted regeneration is more cost-effective and potentially more efficient than natural regeneration.
