LOPEZ MENENDEZ, Marisol. The Gesture, the Body and the Memory: The Historical Echoes of the Execution of Miguel Pro. Hist. graf [online]. 2019, n.52, pp.187-224. ISSN 1405-0927.
This article analyzes the death of Father Miguel Pro, a jesuit priest executed in 1927 in Mexico City after being accused of participating in an assassination attempt against the elect president Alvaro Obregon. By using an array of stances on Pro’s death, the text aims at exploring some of the ways in which corporeality, gestures, and images are linked to modern martyrdom. It also explores how witnessing through technical means has transformed the very notion of martyrdom and shaped social and political discourses linking martirial death to non-religious contexts.
