Resumen

SUAREZ GOMEZ, Ainhoa. Historiology: Edmundo O’Gorman, José Ortega y Gasset and the Foundations of the Science of History. Hist. graf [online]. 2020, n.54, pp.231-297.  Epub 30-Mayo-2020. ISSN 1405-0927.  https://doi.org/10.48102/hyg.vi54.292.

“Historiology” is a word scarcely used in theory and philosophy of history. Theorised by Edmundo O’Gorman in Crisis y porvenir de la ciencia histórica, and inherited from the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset, the term serves to consolidate a complex and innovative scientific programme, as well as to propose a metahistorical vision of the world and its development. This work offers a comparative reading of Ortega and O’Gorman’s ideas around Historiology as a way to: 1) analyse the cultural scenario in which O’Gorman’s idea of "genuine historical science" arises; 2) examine the leading role of Ortega’s philosophy in O’Gorman’s thought; and 3) study the similarities and differences between the ideas of historical science of these two authors, as well as some historiographical applications made by O’Gorman.
