GONZALEZ MONTES, Soledad. Violencia contra las mujeres, derechos y ciudadanía en contextos rurales e indígenas de México. Convergencia [online]. 2009, vol.16, n.50, pp.165-1185. ISSN 2448-5799.
This article reviews recent contributions to understanding the problem of violence against women in rural and indigenous contexts in Mexico. Its main argument is that the struggle against domestic violence has been a central feature of the work carried out by rural women's organizations which questions social relations that oppress them. The search for justice has also been fundamental both for individual and organized women, as well as for the affirmation of new ideas concerning women's roles. In the process of questioning the established gender order, such organizations have appropriated national and international legislation to support their demands, and have become important sources of change for the gender representations and practices in their communities.
