We describe the development and morphology of gametophyte and young sporophyte of Polystichum fournieri. Studied material was collected in a cloud forest in San Rafael, Tlalmanalco municipality, State of Mexico. The spores were sown in three natural substrates, maquique fiber steam of Cyathea, moss and plant litter. The germination pattern was of Vittaria type and prothallial development was of Aspidium type.

Two types of spores were found, one type small subspheroidal and the other ellipsoidal, the percentage of occurrence was 32% and 68% respectively and two types of cordate gametophytes were obtained; 32.6% with only archegonia and 65.2% with only antheridia, the gametangia were always immature. It is possible that small and spheroidals spores could form male prothalli and the other female prothalli. Young sporophytes were apogamous and were obtained around 206 days after sowing in moss, after 103 days on maquique and we cannot observe their development in plant litter.
