MILLER, Dinorah; GARAY, Adrián de y MONTOYA ZEPEDA, Iván. Common Disagreement: Demand for Higher Education and Applicant Characteristics at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. RMIE [online]. 2021, vol.26, n.88, pp.253-282. Epub 24-Mar-2021. ISSN 1405-6666.
The public universities in the Mexico City metropolitan area accept fewer than one-half of the students who apply at the undergraduate level. At Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), fewer than one-fifth of the applicants enroll. Limited information exists about applicant characteristics and little attention is paid to this information at institutions of higher education. The current article provides some of the sociodemographic and scholastic traits of students who applied to UAM from 2004 to 2018, with a comparison between the rejected accepted applicants. The information is from the databases at the university's directorship of school systems, collected from a questionnaire completed by applicants in each admissions cycle: Spring and Fall. The characteristics of the two sub-populations are affected by the enrollment periods, especially in terms of academic progress.
