Resumen

RODRIGUEZ-GOMEZ, Katya. Is there feminization of poverty in Mexico? Evidence from a unitary to a collective household model. Pap. poblac [online]. 2012, vol.18, n.72, pp.181-212. ISSN 2448-7147.

This paper attempts to discuss poverty situation of women in Mexico in order to know if there is feminization of poverty. The paper applies a different model of intra-household distribution of resources: the collective model. In order to avoid the main problems of the conventional analysis of poverty: disregard for gender differentials. This article argues that by changing the model, it is possible to find a significant gender gap in poverty. A higher rate of female poverty is found in male headed households. However, it is not possible to assume that there is a feminization of poverty because the concept is not useful to describe the situation of female poverty. Finally, the paper provides some suggestions about the onward steps in researching this subject.

Palabras llave : feminization; poverty; collective model; gender; women; Mexico.
