BLANCO, Emilio. Inequality of opportunity in the upper secondary level of education in Mexico City: transition and completion. Pap. poblac [online]. 2014, vol.20, n.80, pp.249-280. ISSN 2448-7147.
Transition and completion of the upper secondary level are two critical educational events, which have received relatively little attention in Mexico. Using data from a retrospective survey of youngsters between ages 18 and 29 from Mexico City in 2010, this article analyzes in detail these events and its determinants. Results show that the transition between lower and upper secondary is still far from being universal, that students from lower social strata are much less likely than students from upper strata to make this transition and that the main reason for this is that these students decide not to try it. Also, a logistic regression model on the probability of completing the upper secondary level showed that, apart from social background, many other variables have a significant influence. Among these, the kind of upper secondary school, having worked at some point before age 19, or having a child before age 20, are particularly remarkable.
