In this paper we analyse the evolution of the main Italian socio-demographic indicators. We use the Theory of demographic transition as reference. We collect the data from Italian National Statistical Institute (ISTAT) and Italian National Observatory on Health. The findings suggest that Italy is experiencing a significant process of population ageing and a decrease in fertility well below the replacement level. Also, Italy follows the main stages of demographic transition but at de same time it has some special characteristics, such as the pronounced regional differences between North and South, which should be studied.
