This article is based on detailed data from a long-term ethnographic study in a Nahuatl speaking region in Mexico. It uses ethno-categories to examine the dynamics of household organization and the social construction of the person in rural communities. The analysis of local concepts illustrates how the Nahua generate family relationships and village organization based on local ideas of work and exchange. The author suggests that this model is applicable to other regions of Mexico. The conclusions draw upon a major theoretical work that proposes unifying the study of kinship and family with gender that has not been used widely in Mexico; here the author argues for the need to rethink anthropological and social theory in light of ethnographic data.
