CHAVEZ GONZALEZ, Mónica Lizbeth. Constructing Nation and Gender from the Body: Physical Education in Post-Revolutionary Mexico. Desacatos [online]. 2009, n.30, pp.43-58. ISSN 2448-5144.
This paper shows how the Mexican Post-revolutionary State integrated physical education to its nationalist policies and used it to configure gender identities. It starts by analyzing gymnastic exhibitions as rituals oriented towards the everyday formation of the post-revolutionary State, as well as a normative tool of citizen’s cultural practices, including gender activities. Given that teachers were an import factor in this process, the paper shows the conceptual representations about gender and body published in a specialized magazine of the Education Ministry. Finally, it illustrates the way in which the introduction of a physical education uniform regulated female bodies.
