GARIBAY, Claudio; BONI, Andrés; PANICO, Francesco y URQUIJO, Pedro. Mining Corporation, Governmental Collusion and Peasant Dispossession: The Case of Goldcorp Inc. at Mazapil, Zacatecas. Desacatos [online]. 2014, n.44, pp.113-142. ISSN 2448-5144.
This paper addresses a case of land dispossession, landscape devastation, and political domination brought upon several Mexican peasant communities by the Canadian corporation Goldcorp, who seeks to appropriate mineral wealth by means of a brutal open pit operation. It is shown how this corporation, with the aid and support of Mexican government agencies, has established ties of domination with local communities founded on the principle of "negative reciprocity", defined as "the attempt to get something for nothing with impunity".This coercive political practice gives away the benefits to the corporation and transfers with impunity social and environmental costs to the communities.
