Resumen

GAMBOA GARCIA, José  y  MARIN URIBE, Rigoberto. Gender and Profession: Preference for the Academic Education, as an Element in Choosing a College Degree. REDIE [online]. 2009, vol.11, n.1, pp.1-13. ISSN 1607-4041.

As part of a research about benefit expectations among applicants to higher education, this article tackles with choosing a career in reference to the preference for education, from the rational analysis perspective. A survey was done among applicants to entrance examinations in two institutions; later a statistical analysis was performed aiming to find a multi-varied model. Findings yield that gender, work and age variables are related to the applicant's preference for the chosen profession. The preference for the profession tends to be a less important element for working women over 20 years-old when making decisions about studying a college degree. Among applicants whose fathers deem higher education to be very important, the probability to take on account the preference of the profession in choosing a college degree was higher for males. This confirms a variation in rational calculations in reference to social features.

Palabras llave : Career choice; gender differences; decision making.
