The increasing incorporation of based on models standards competency in many education and training systems, beyond innovative policies and strategies, answers to the diffusion of these models as part of globalization processes within and between nations. The knowledge of the properties of models destined to promote competencies is of great importance for teaching-learning systems, due to their repercussions, in both the educational and labor environment world. Based on an extensive review of concepts and terms related with education and training based competency standards, the purpose of this article is to analyze a series of biases (trends, omissions, distortions, misunderstandings) common to policies and initiatives concerning training by competences.
