Resumen

PATINO SALCEDA, Josefina. Professional Doctorates: Conceptions and Debate Interview with Luis Ponce Ramírez. REDIE [online]. 2017, vol.19, n.4, pp.149-164. ISSN 1607-4041.

Doctoral training is undergoing changes at international level. In Mexico, one of the most recent changes is the recognition of Professional Doctorates (PD) by the National Postgraduate Quality Program (PNPC in Spanish). In this interview, Dr. Luis Ponce Ramirez -Graduate Director at the National Science and Technology Council (Conacyt)- explains the meaning of professional doctorates and reasons for its accreditation. Thus, PDs focus on information to solve complex problems in different social environments using a multidisciplinary approach. Graduates are expected to become part of sectors other than academia. There were two main reasons for fostering this type of doctorate programs: lack of job vacancies for graduates in the academic sector and bolstering research focused on solving societal issues. With this and other changes it is expected to achieve relevance.

Palabras llave : Professional doctorate; assessment; Conacyt.
