This article examines the concept of orality in the scientific and didactic fields from a space of specific interest: the calculated and controlled orality that is registered in literate cultures and that needs didactic mediation. The name orality does not present, in the shared lexicon, the complexity of the name writing because its conceptualization is indirectly derived from the adjective oral. In the language sciences, orality is delimited from the oral adjective as a pair of the oral-written variant, but without reducing this distinction to a mediological category. From outside linguistic studies, a position that overcomes the vision of polarity and homogeneity of the orality and writing domains is exposed. In the conceptions of secondary school teachers in Argentina, orality is perceived mostly as a homogeneous communication modality, as opposed to writing.
