RAYAS ROJAS, Laura Teresa y MENDEZ PUGA, Ana María. University students and writing the academic essay: difficulties and possibilities. Innov. educ. (Méx. DF) [online]. 2017, vol.17, n.75, pp.123-147. ISSN 1665-2673.
The academic essay is a commonly required text in humanities programs. However, many students demonstrate that they do not know how to write correctly. In order to learn more about this situation, we carried out a study whose purpose was to identify the different meanings implicit in writing academic essays. The work was done through the perspective of sociocultural theory. Ten students of psychology at a public university were interviewed. The information obtained was organized in categories based on previous works that support this research. The results suggest that students perceive the essay as a text that combines subjectivity and knowledge. The study revealed that the participants believe that the interactions they establish with classmates and professors can be both beneficial and obstructive when they write academic essays. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that students believe that the lack of the unification of criteria for the creation of this type of text is an impediment to producing quality works.
