This paper is based on an exploratory field study, whose main objective is to define and understand the limitations, challenges, strengths and opportunities of teaching in virtual environments (VE). The methodology used was mostly observational and mainly qualitative due to the characteristics of the study’s objective. The project was carried out with four groups of students from different educational levels: bachelor’s, specialization and doctoral. Part of the results obtained indicate: VEs present instructors with the challenges of defining thematic content, designing a didactic strategy, and learning and mastering the use of VEs. The opportunities are the possibilities to create alternative ways to access information and knowledge based on ludic foundations. With regard to the strengths, there is the possibility to integrate VEs as digital didactic resources. The limitations lie in the requirements for technological infrastructure. This first study indicates the necessary foundations to design a didactic model that supports the instructor in the use of VEs with educational purposes.
