The conception of time of the pre-Hispanic Maya is studied through epigraphic and philological analysis of hieroglyphic texts under the theoretical approaches of the Italian school of the history of religions. The data indicate that time is animated and consists of tangible discrete units that are represented by a calendar of 365 days. The properties of each day are provided by an oracle of lots of 260 units that is projected over time. Both time and the oracle are thought as gods that alternate in a fixed and cyclic order and not as an abstract physical quantity.
