Resumen

PALMA MORA, Mónica. Asociaciones de inmigrantes extranjeros en la ciudad de México: Una mirada a fines del siglo XX. Migr. Inter [online]. 2005, vol.3, n.2, pp.29-57. ISSN 2594-0279.

One of the objectives of associations formed by immigrants to Mexico City is to provide a means for meeting and creating unity among people from the same country of origin. This essay explores the role that these organizations play at the turn of the twentieth century, through analysis of their objectives, activities, and functions. Only groups that have had historic continuity in Mexico are included, those from the United States, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, and Japan. This study offers first-hand information on internal forms of organization of these associations and the ways in which they maintain the cultural norms of their societies of origin. It also sketches the mechanisms that immigrants use to adapt to the receiving society.

Palabras llave : international migration; migrant associations; identity; Mexico City; Mexico.
