Resumen
NAVARRETE, Jorge Eduardo. From BRICS to BRICS and Mexico. Economía UNAM [online]. 2011, vol.8, n.23, pp.52-77. ISSN 1665-952X.
From BRIC to BRICS and Mexico tells two parallel stories: the rather peculiar marketing trick played by Goldman Sachs -the famous and infamous financial-services giant- and the construction of a brand-new intergovernmental organization, that brings together five emerging economies of increasing size and influence in the global economy. The first one is told following the various studies and documents which, from 2001 on, Goldman Sachs has published in his web page and the actions and reactions originated in them. The second one is constructed with the declarations and other documents of the BRICS three summit meetings_ Ekaterimburg (2009), Brasilia (2010) and Sanya (2011). Mexico has been around, rather on the margins of these devolpments. The real BRICS -as opposed to the virtual one imagined by GS- appears to have initiated a consolidation phase, which can occupy most of the first half of the present decade.
