Stemming from a socio-narrative approach, this paper analyses the changes in the life stories of men in battering programs. Based on a corpus of 39 narrative interviews with Argentinean men in different stages of their treatment, a thematic analysis was conducted, comparting them according to the predominant approach in each institution. The paper shows that desistance is dependent on the analytical framework of the programs. The different models of desistance indicate tensions between the psychologisation and individualisation of violence, and the social contextualisation of aggressive behaviours. Attending programs with different theoretical perspectives has a differential subjective effect on the awareness of the damage perpetrated. We argue that showing the varied identity processes resulting from different institutional treatments is key to repoliticising betterer intervention programs.
