With a large part of the ageing baby boom generation (1946-64) seeking to emigrate to countries in the Global South, Mexico is one of the most attractive of such destinations given, among other factors, the fact that established communities of retired foreign nationals have been present there for more than a century. The present study used the case of Ajijic, Jalisco, focusing on the interactions between foreign nationals and local inhabitants and analyzing the social imaginaries that have developed in the latter with regard to both them-selves and the former, as well as the roles played by memory and changes in collective identity and space. The results are taken from 42 semistructured interviews conducted with both foreign nationals and local inhabitants, revealing that the latter accept the presence of the former, who represent an economic benefit to local people and provide them an identity distinct to other communities in the region. Moreover, local inhabitants have developed social imaginaries that demonstrate their economic dependence on foreign nationals.
