Resumen

SANTIAGO ESQUIVEL, Luis Alberto De et al. Arthroplasty vs osteosynthesis in fractures of 3 and 4 parts of proximal humerus in patients over 50 years old. Acta méd. Grupo Ángeles [online]. 2020, vol.18, n.4, pp.356-359.  Epub 06-Jun-2022. ISSN 1870-7203.  https://doi.org/10.35366/97260.

The proximal humerus fracture has an incidence that increases as the age of the population increases. A deterioration in the functionality of the upper extremities can mean an alteration in the functionality and quality of life of individuals.

Material and methods:

Pilot, longitudinal, prospective and analytical study. Where patients over 50 years old who presented a proximal humerus fracture of 3 or 4 fragments treated at the Regional Hospital “Gral. Ignacio Zaragoza” of ISSSTE from January to December 2018. To whom arthroplasty or osteosynthesis was performed. Following them for one year, at the end of which a functionality analysis was performed with the ASES score.

Results:

23 patients were assigned into two groups, the osteosynthesis of 12 patients and 11 for arthroplasty. The average age of each group was 65.25 ± 8.15 years and 69.36 ± 6.57 years respectively. The score for the ASES scale was 49.17 ± 12.09 for osteosynthesis and 58 ± 11.89 in cases of arthroplasty, no significant difference was found between both treatments (p = 0.0923).

Conclusion:

Between arthroplasty and osteosynthesis as a treatment for a proximal humerus fracture in adults over 50 years of age there is no difference, according to the ASES assessment scale.
