Introduction:
type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a condition with a high disease burden and is frequently accompanied by depressive symptoms, which could affect treatment adherence.
Objective:
a cross-sectional study was done to measure the impact of depressive symptoms on adherence to treatment of people with T2D.
Material and methods:
sociodemographic data were collected; the Hamilton depression scale (HADS) was used to measure depressive symptoms, and the Morisky medication adherence scale (MMAS) to assess adherence.
Results:
correlations were found between the male gender and the number of antidiabetic medications, physical activity, and several medications, and HADS score and low adherence. A significant regression was found between the HADS and MMAS scores.
Conclusions:
depressive symptoms were predictors of adherence in patients with T2D, and associations were found between sociodemographic and clinical variables.
