This work purpose is to identify the results of the investment made by the different City councils administrations in this municipality located to the northwest of the state of Sonora, Mexico, which at its level of competence, regulates parts of the exploitation, use and distribution of natural resources. Data was obtained from the Congress in the State of Sonora, in order to find significant differences in the applied areas. It should be noted, that the information contained in these documents, is largely descriptive, so an inferential calculation is made to establish confidence limits, and the Wilcoxon rank test methodology is as well applied. This study was executed to answer the following question: What have been the results of investment applied to sustainable development in the period 2001-2012, for the municipality of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora? The comparative analysis results, reveal that there are significant differences in the variables of Invested Budget in Sustainable Development, Public Debt and the Global Crisis of 2007, nevertheless, in this investigation it is also observed inefficiency in the management of the public resources in detriment for the natural resources sustainability in the region.
