ARIAS GONZALEZ, Consuelo y LINA MANJARREZ, Pedro. Practical-utilitarian Appropriation of the Landscape in Mexican Tourist Enclaves. El periplo sustentable [online]. 2018, n.35, pp.268-296. ISSN 1870-9036.
Tourism is one of the most important economic activities worldwide. The landscape is one of its most important resources, particularly for the sun and beach, highlighting that with high ecological and landscape value, and is a fundamental component of tourist attractions. This landscape has been assigned a monetary value, it has been used as a commodity, and since the decade of the 60’s it has been used for the massive and extensive development of coastal tourism based on the “3S”. This document analyzes the practical-utilitarian form of appropriation of the landscape in Mexican tourist enclaves with the purpose of discussing how this form of appropriation has generated a series of ecological and landscape implications that have put the resource itself at risk. It is an essay-type work, the result of a bibliographic analysis on the evolution of tourism in Mexico, particularly coastal type, based on the “3S” (sun, sea, sand). The tourism enclave model arises under the premise of becoming a trigger for regional development and is characterized by the concentration of infrastructure and equipment on a large scale, which has resulted in the transformation of the landscape, the overuse of resources and the loss of ecological and landscape values, affecting their own decline and putting at risk the sustainability of economic activity in different destinations; therefore, landscape conservation should be a priority.
